The roast pork dinner at Senerchia's comes with potatoes and vegetable for $9.50.
The roast pork sandwich at Senerchia’s butcher shop has been our go-to Monday lunch for the last year. Just a block from Bayonne’s 34th Street lightrail station and opposite Judicke’s Bakery, it’s the closest we can find to DiNic’s or Defonte’s without going too far north or south. But while they know pork, they don’t know what to do with it after it’s on the roll. The basic sandwich is $6.50 with nothing but a splash of gravy on the bun. We prefer the pork padded with sweet and hot peppers and a slice or two of Provolone which raises the price to $7.50 – $8 depending who’s waiting on us. Another option is the dinner, (which makes a better lunch, whatever is left after the rush gets packed and left in the refrigeration case for the rest of the week and it doesn’t age well.) For $9.50 an overstuffed sandwich’s worth of pork is piled with green beans and carrots and roasted potatoes all best washed down with a bottle of Boylan’s Birch Beer.
Senerchia’s Meat & Deli is located at 762 Broadway at 34th Street in Bayonne.

Sonic, already in Totowa, Hasbrouck Hts and Highland Park, is planning its closest location to NYC yet.
Now that Bayonne’s floated a high-risk low-interest loan for the completion of Bayonne Crossing shopping center it’s no longer a mystery who would really sign leases to break ground on tainted soil. When the project was initially announced in 2007, Circuit City dropped as the project’s anchor before going bankrupt. But with Wal-Mart’s opening in the Crossing now certain, more chains like Lowe’s and Sleepy’s are forthcoming and all those customers have got to eat.
Now we know Longhorn has signed a lease to become the town’s first steakhouse, joining the Route 440’s highest tier of eateries – Ten East and Houlihan’s. And while Ruby Tuesday and Bayonne’s first freestanding Starbucks (there’s one in Stop & Shop) should be up next, Sonic Drive-In has officially signed a lease, bringing its Cherry Limeade Chillers closer to NYC than ever before, just across the maybe soon to be scrapped bridge from Staten Island.

Grace Van Vorst’s 20th annual Cathedral Arts Festival will be toasted with a champagne gala on November 14th. A more intimate affair than years previous, the fundraiser kicks off 730pm one week from tomorrow. The art sale and auction will feature food from Skinner’s Loft, Bar Majestic and the Philly Pretzel Company. (Although if any other restaurants read this and want to participate, I’m sure they won’t turn you away.) Tickets are a reasonable $40 each, or $50 at the door.
Of course champagne and charity aren’t limited to one side of the river. Across the Hudson two days earlier on November 12th are both PJ Wine’s Grand Tasting at City Winery and Tour de Champagne at La Venue.
Ticket sales for PJ Wine’s Grand Tasting benefit Action Against Hunger. General admission is $99.99 but for $149.99 you can arrive 90 minutes earlier for special access to their Dom Perignon and Krug collections. At the same time, Tour de Champagne partners with Sherry-Lehmann to present more than 30 different brands like Gosset and Nicolas Feuillatte. Tickets are priced from $100 to $195 for the VIP hour featuring a Moet Hennessy Prestige Champagne Seminar. The evening’s silent auction also benefits Action Against Hunger.

Big Bird and Cookie Monster campaigning in Freehold yesterday.
Whether or not you support a Muppet for the governorship, a check fraud mastermind for assemblyman or an unpatriotic real estate fraud to take his place on the Bayonne city council, remember to vote today! And if you want to eat like a large living politico, toss your weight around one of these most local eateries.
Sen. Menendez regularly fetches his own coffee from the Newport Starbucks while his driver waits outside. Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie kicked off his campaign over hot dogs at Journal Square’s Boulevard Drinks while Governor Corzine likes to celebrate elections at Brownstone Diner. But when not reaching out to the electorate he frequents Jersey City’s Edward’s Steakhouse and Hoboken’s Anthony David’s. Meanwhile, Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer and candidate Beth Mason have both hosted fundraisers at Elysian Cafe on 10th and Washington in recent weeks.
More notoriously, Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone was present for Ron Manzo’s $10000 bribe in the parking lot of Bayonne’s Lighthouse Restaurant at 699 Broadway and Bayonne Councilman-at-Large candidate John Cupo promised free Biggie’s Clams for all before canceling his Hoboken block party last year. No word on who’s catering his victory party tonight.

With the exception of Al Richards in Bayonne, there’s not much chocolate worth mentioning in Hudson County. (Although joining the Godiva rewards club in their Newport Centre outlet is always worth a free piece.) So while it’s likely everybody will be passing out Hershey’s minis and Reese’s peanut butter cups on Halloween tomorrow, there’s no reason to limit one’s self on the leftovers. Beginning this afternoon and running through Sunday, the 12th annual Chocolate Show is taking place a PATH ride away at Metropolitan Pavilion on West 18th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues in New York City.
In years past there were a greater selection of purveyors from around the world – many, me among them, would go only for the chance to buy candy from Mary’s of Japan, the confectioner who brought Valentine’s Day to the country – but what it lacks in quantity this year, a $28 ticket buys access to quality that’s otherwise inaccessible or at best a terrible hassle, like trekking to the LES for Roni-Sue’s chocolate and bacon creations.

Roni-Sue’s, located inside Essex Market, hogs the bacon chocolate market with creations like chocolate covered bacon called pig candy and bacorn – caramel popcorn sticky with bacon and pine nut. The relatively more subtle bacon butter crunch, ($5) is my personal favorite. Read the rest of this entry »

Blizzard of the month, adventure of a lifetime.
Grub Street recently ran a round-up of the season’s best pumpkin desserts and included among them was the Pumpkin Pie Blizzard at Dairy Queen on West Side Avenue. Not one to visit the west side… ever… I depended on my iPhone’s Google Maps to show me the way but I made a terrible mistake typing in “513 Westside Ave” which doesn’t really exist. Google Maps mistakes a northern extension of West Side Avenue for my typo and sent me a few blocks just southwest of White Mana instead.

It’s a one-way street off a neglected dirt and rock stretch of St. Paul’s Avenue lined with dilapidated shacks, barbed wire fences, abandoned construction equipment and burnt out cars. But that doesn’t mean there’s no signs of life. As soon as I realized I was trapped and plotting safe passage around the block, they started racing ATVs. I don’t who they are, but they’re people who know they’re somewhere they can fearlessly race recreational vehicles without police coming around. So rather than find out what would have happened if The Bonfire of the Vanities met Mad Max, I found room on the sidewalk to turn around, headed back east on St. Paul’s and got the hell out of there.
